Lorraine Clissold's cooking classes are not just about teaching Chinese recipes but about crossing culinary boundaries. Lorraine lived in Beijing from 1995 to 2005 and, fascinated to find a nation that loved to eat and always ate well, she frequented street stalls and markets and learnt to speak Mandarin Chinese so that she could interact with chefs and restaurateurs.
Her interest led her to the study of Chinese traditional medicine; she appeared frequently in the Chinese press, hosted a cooking programme on Chinese national television and founded the Chinese Cooking School, the first to be dedicated to teaching Westerners the wisdom of the traditional Chinese diet. On her return to the UK in 2005 she wrote ‘Why the Chinese Don’t Count Calories’ to demystify the Chinese diet and show the West how food can be make you fit not fat.
Lorraine now offers a range of classes from her home by the River Swale in Richmond North Yorkshire. You can discover the secrets of the Chinese kitchen first hand in the beautiful surroundings one of Britain’s best kept secrets.
Richmond North Yorkshire was voted the greatest town in the UK in 2009. With castle, Georgian theatre, and some of the best walking in the country, it has all the ingredients for a great few days away and that’s before you throw in a unique culinary experience.
